Aicent and SK Telecom sign 3G roaming agreement
Aicent announced that it has entered into a commercial 3G Roaming eXchange (3GRX) service contract with SK Telecom. The Aicent 3GRX service enables SK Telecom to provide data roaming services to their mobile users traveling abroad, and allows foreign travelers in South Korea to enjoy the data services provided by their home operators, all without changing their handsets.
SK Telecom is one of the world's most successful mobile operators at penetrating the mobile data market with advanced data applications and mobile content. However, until the recent launch of the W-CDMA by SK Telecom, GSM operators, who collectively serve more than 70% of worldwide mobile subscribers, could not offer a data roaming service with SK Telecom without having their customers switch handsets. This was due to the incompatibility between the CDMA and GSM technologies. Aicent, as the 3GRX provider, will enable automatic data roaming between SK Telecom W-CDMA and worldwide GSM operators.
"Our W-CDMA roaming through Aicent 3GRX is an important milestone on our path to offer automatic roaming with GSM operators," said Mr. Hak Hee Lee, General Manager of SK Telecom's Global Roaming Team.
