Aicent Partnering with Cingular and Telenor Mobile to Deliver MMS to the World

Aicent, a provider of mobile data network services and solutions for global mobile operators, today announced partnerships with Cingular and Telenor Mobil as part of its effort to bring multimedia messaging service (MMS) to every corner of the planet.

MMS, which grew out of short message service (SMS), enables users to send and receive multimedia messages, including graphics, video and audio clips, wirelessly over cellular networks. The technology is designed to work with mobile packet data services such as GPRS and 3G. Originally developed within the 3G Partnership Program (and now standardized within the 3GPP2), MMS has been deployed world-wide and across both GSM/GPRS and CDMA networks.

According to a company news release, Cingular has signed an interworking service agreement with Aicent to expand its MMS offerings to overseas. Aicent will establish MMS interconnections for Cingular with global mobile operators in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Global MMS implementation will start immediately.

Meanwhile, Telenor Mobil, Norway’s leading mobile telecommunications carrier, will use Aicent’s MMS Gateway and MMS Virtual Delivery (MMS-VD) services to provide international MMS. Aicent MMS-VD allows subscribers to deliver MMS messages to any subscriber regardless of handset interoperability and operator interworking.

Aicent is also a leading GRX provider (Cingular has been using Aicent’s GRX service to offer international GPRS data roaming since 2004) and its services reach over 500 million mobile subscribers through its GRX platform. The company also provides SMS hubbing, mobile messaging delivery, and other value added services across all types of 2.5G/3G mobile networks.

Aicent announced its MMS agreements with Cingular and Telenor Mobil today during the 3GSM World Congress at Barcelona, Spain.

“We are excited to partner with Cingular to pave the way towards a truly interoperable mobile environment,” said Lynn Liu, President and CEO of Aicent. “With more than 70 mobile operators in over 40 countries already commercially available from the Aicent MMS hub and more on the way, we look forward to assisting Cingular in expanding their MMS international coverage.”

Liu added that Aicent is equally proud to partner with Telenor Mobil “in Europe’s top MMS market.”
