International MMS Service Launched for Telstra Mobile Customers

August 22, 2005: Telstra mobile customers can now send and receive pictures and videos overseas following today's launch of Telstra's International Multimedia Messaging (MMS) service.

Telstra MMS Product Manager, Richard Neeson, said the International MMS service provided customers with the ability to capture memorable moments with their camera phone and share it with family, friends and business colleagues overseas.

"As more people travel abroad, they want a mobile service that enables them to quickly share their experiences with friends and relatives in other countries. Telstra's International MMS service now provides this opportunity," Mr Neeson said.

Telstra is predicting that an increasing number of customers will use a 3G network to share high resolution pictures, video clips and sound files following the introduction of this service by Telstra later this year.

"This new service has been launched in time for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, which is likely to attract a large number of people eager to capture and share memorable moments by using their camera phones," Mr Neeson said.

Telstra's International MMS service will initially be available to seven Asian countries and is likely to be deployed to other regions in the near future. Countries at launch include China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan.

"We have initially focussed on the all important Asian market where customers are traditionally heavy users of new technology and mobile services.

"An analysis of our traffic demand shows there is considerable interest for this type of service, particularly from Australia to China, so we are confident that this service will be very well received by our customers," Mr Neeson said.

Telstra's International MMS service works across all of Telstra's mobile data networks including GSM, CDMA and EVDO. Any Telstra customer who has an MMS compatible phone on any compatible international network can use the International MMS service.

Telstra's international MMS service has been developed with the support of the Aicent Inc International Hub, an organisation that links 27 operators around the world servicing over 270 million mobile users.

Telstra will have a special introductory offer of standard messaging rates of 50c for pictures and 75c for videos for International MMS until 31 January, 2006. From 1 February, 2006 all International MMS will be charged at 75 cents.

To use this service customers simply drop the first zero of the mobile number and replace it with the country code. For example, if wanting to send to an MMS to China mobile number 025999999, the number to use becomes +86 25999999.
